ROY LICHTENSTEIN
(Manhattan, New York, U.S.A. 1923 - 1997)
Crack! Now, Mes Petits... Pour La France!, 1963
Signed
Offset lithograph without print run number
"Crak! Now, Mes Petits... Pour la France!" is considered one of the author"s first Pop Art works; this piece is a satirical representation of the cliché images generated by the media of war and the military. We can see in the scene the female figure, which is generating an action (hence the sound of the explosion crack!) while observing through a monocular lens. We are spectators of the war that is taking place at that moment.
This series of silkscreens is an appropriation of visual codes used in comic #102 of Star Spangled War Stories. According to the Lichtenstein Foundation "Crak! Now, Mes Petits... Pour la France!" It was a marketing poster used to advertise the artist"s exhibition in 1963 at Leo Castelli in New York, which is why we can find the date and name of the aforementioned gallery at the bottom of the silkscreen.
