Description

The blade of hira-zukuri form, carved with a dragon and ken and a bonji horimono, the scabbard and hilt of kinji lacquer with details of e-nashiji and togidashi maki-e, elaborately inlaid in typical Shibayama style encrustations with an entertainer playing a flute while balancing a ball on a tall pole on his head beneath a flowering prunus tree, to the amusement of a small boy on one side and similarly decorated with a pigeon perched on a bough of the same tree on the reverse, the tsuka (hilt or handle) embellished with a different vase of ikebana, the kashira (pommel at the tip of the tsuka), fuchi-gashira (decorative handle ornaments) and kojiri (decorative ornament at the base of the scabbard) of silver, engraved with formal foliate designs; unsigned.
