Description

The flush-fitting cover worked in high relief of bronze, silver and gold inlay with two figures enacting a New Year's No performance on the balcony of a courtly villa, one attired in the costume of a Shojo alluding to the No play of the same title, dancing to the accompaniment of flutes and drums played by a group of musicians depicted on the inside of the lid, worked in copper, silver, bronze and gold flat inlay, the corners of the lid with flat inlaid details of translucent enamel, the sides of the box decorated in low relief of gold inlay with young pine saplings, signed inside the lid with chiselled characters Noriaki sen (chiselled by Noriaki) and on the underside with a gold square seal in tensho script possibly reading Sawaaki. (2).
